DIY Shiney Lip Balm
Did you know you can skip buying lip balm altogether and make your own at home in just a few minutes? I haven’t purchased lip balm in over 20 years, and honestly, I’ve never looked back.
Not only does it save money, but it also helps cut down on plastic waste since I get to reuse old containers over and over again. Lip balm was actually the very first cosmetic recipe I ever made, and it was the start of my whole journey into DIY skincare and makeup.
Why Make Your Own Lip Balm?
Saves money — the ingredients last a long time and can be used in multiple DIY projects.
Cuts down on waste — no need to keep buying tubes of balm wrapped in plastic packaging.
Customizable — you can control the texture, shine, and scent.
Eco-friendly — reusing jars or tins keeps plastic out of the landfill.
This version has a glossy, Vaseline-like texture that feels luxurious on the lips. The secret? Castor oil and vitamin E oil, which not only add shine but also keep your lips deeply moisturized.
DIY Glossy Lip Balm Recipe
Here’s my go-to formula:
2g Beeswax
2.5g Castor Oil (for added shine)
10g Coconut Oil
14g Avocado Oil
2 drops Vitamin E Oil
Instructions:
Add the beeswax, coconut oil, and avocado oil to a heat-safe bowl. Melt them gently using a double boiler method.
Once melted, stir in the castor oil and vitamin E oil.
Pour the mixture into clean, repurposed lip balm tins, jars, or tubes.
Let it cool and solidify — and it’s ready to use!
Tips for Success
If you like a firmer balm, add a little more beeswax. For a softer, glossier finish, increase the oils.
You can add a drop of your favorite essential oil (like peppermint or lavender) for a light scent, though keep it minimal to avoid irritation.
Save and repurpose old containers — small jars, tins, or even cleaned lipstick tubes work perfectly.
Making your own lip balm is quick, easy, and incredibly empowering. Once you try it, you’ll wonder why you ever bought it at the store. For me, this simple DIY was the gateway into creating my own natural cosmetics — and it all started with a little pot of lip balm.
