The Power of Rest
Iβll admit itβI used to believe rest was optional. That momentum was everything. That if I stopped, Iβd fall behind. When I started working with a social media coach, one of the first things he told me was to build in time to disconnect. I resisted it at first. I genuinely didnβt think I needed breaks. I was passionate, motivated, and could keep going. But over time, and especially after this recent trip to Mexico, Iβve realizedβ¦ he was right.
This time, I went into vacation with a different mindset.
The Importance of Disconnecting
It wasnβt my first time traveling, but it was the first time I truly gave myself permission to not work during a trip. My family and I were heading out on a much-needed vacation, and for the first time in years, I left my laptop at home. No editing, no emails, no social media management. Just pure, uninterrupted rest.
And it felt amazing.
No pressure to post, no internal deadlines whispering at me, no to-do list waiting in the corner of my mind. I didnβt even realize how much I needed that space until I had it. And what surprised me most? I started to feel inspired again.
Why Time Away Is Necessary
I love what I doβtruly. Creating content, engaging with my community, writing, filming, sharing my thoughts and valuesβit all lights me up. But loving your work doesnβt mean youβre immune to burnout.
I didnβt realize how much the constant doing had dulled my creativity. Thatβs the thing about rest: it creates space. And in that space, inspiration flows. During my time away, I wasnβt trying to brainstorm content ideasβ¦ but they came anyway. The kind that feel exciting and fresh. The kind that make you want to pick up your camera againβnot because you have to, but because you want to.
Real Moments of Connection
Beyond the professional reset, this trip also gave me something even more precious: quality time with my family.
It was only the second time my teenage kids had ever flown. Traveling with them, without any work distractions, was such a gift. We laughed, explored, swam, rested, and just were. No pressure. No multitasking. Just presence.
It reminded me how rare those moments are in the day-to-day rush of life. As a content creator and freelancer, itβs so easy to get caught up in the next piece of content, the next deadline, the next opportunity. But these momentsβbeing present with the people you loveβthis is what actually matters.
A Lesson for Freelancers (and Anyone Who Works Hard)
If youβre a freelancer or creative entrepreneur, this might hit especially close to home. We set our own schedules, and because of that, we often forget to schedule rest. Itβs easy to feel like we always need to be available, always doing more, always online.
But hereβs what Iβve learned: rest isnβt a break from the work. Rest is part of the work.
When you take time awayβreal, guilt-free timeβyou come back recharged. You create from a place of clarity, not exhaustion. You make better decisions. You have more to give.
Conclusion: Stepping Back to Move Forward
So hereβs what Iβll leave you with: Rest is not a luxury. Itβs not indulgent. Itβs essential.
Whether youβre a creator, a freelancer, a parent, or anyone who wears multiple hats, donβt wait for burnout to remind you that youβre human. Choose to step back before youβre forced to.
My recent trip to Mexico reminded me that rest can be the most productive thing you do. I came back with a full heart, a clear mind, and a renewed passion for the work I love.
So next time you find yourself saying, βI donβt have time for a break,β remember this: sometimes, the best way to move forward is by stepping back.
