DIY Highlighter without Eyeshadow

I never used highlighter when I was younger and only discovered it with the rise of Instagram. Watching various creators use it to bring dimension and accentuate parts of their face got me curious. While I’m not a make-up artist or cosmetic chemist, I love experimenting and creating things myself.

I’ll show you four ways to make highlighter without using any eyeshadow. The third method is a makeup-free option that uses only one ingredient – perfect for those no-makeup makeup looks!

1. Powder Highlighter

For the powder highlighter, I use mica powder. Mica powder, a combination of mica and oxides, comes in many colors, allowing you to find the perfect shade. Its natural shimmer makes it ideal for highlighter.

Here’s how I made it:

  • I mixed two colors of mica with some arrowroot powder.

2. Liquid Highlighter

Next up, I made a liquid highlighter or serum highlighter using jojoba oil and a bit of my powder highlighter blend. Jojoba oil is fantastic for this product because it penetrates the skin quickly, ensuring it isn’t too oily. Plus, it’s suitable for all skin types.

3. Cream Highlighter

For the cream highlighter, I essentially made a lip balm using wax, shea butter, and oil. Here’s the recipe:

  • 1.5g beeswax or candelilla wax

  • 3g shea butter

  • 3g coconut oil

  • 1/4 tsp arrowroot powder

  • 1/2 tsp mica powder

I added mica powder and arrowroot powder, similar to the powder highlighter. It’s crucial to let the oil cool down and solidify a bit before mixing in the powders to ensure a uniform product.

4. Oil Highlighter

Finally, using oil as a highlighter is excellent for those no-makeup makeup looks. It’s actually skincare, not makeup!

Key Takeaways:

  • Powder Highlighter: Light makeup, better for oily skin or summer months.

  • Serum Highlighter: A great blend of skincare and makeup.

  • Cream Highlighter: Ideal for dry skin or wintertime when your skin needs more moisture.

  • Oil Highlighter: Perfect for makeup-free looks, offering skincare benefits.

Personally, I’m loving the serum highlighter. The cream highlighter is also fun to bring on road trips because it doesn’t leak. Each highlighter has it’s purpose so I’ll be using all methods!
