Make your own Zero Waste Scrunchies

Hello, everyone! Today, I’m excited to share a fun and easy DIY project that’s perfect for using up those fabric scraps you have lying around. Not only is this a great way to reduce waste, but it's also a fun creative outlet.

Why Make Your Own Scrunchies?

As I wandered through Walmart the other day, I was overwhelmed by the sheer number of hair ties available. There were endless options, but none of them felt special or unique. Plus, the price for a pack of just five scrunchies was around $9-10! Instead of spending money on mass-produced products, I prefer to make my own out of scrap materials. It’s more sustainable, cost-effective, and gives me the satisfaction of creating something with my own hands.

DIY Scrunchies from Scrap Fabric

In this DIY, we’re going to make scrunchies using fabric scraps that measure approximately 21-24 inches long and 3-4 inches wide. I’ll also share a no-sew hack for those who aren’t confident with a needle and thread.

Materials Needed:

  • Scrap fabric (21-24 inches long, 3-4 inches wide)

  • Elastic 7 inches long (you can use scrap pieces and sew them together if too short)

  • Safety pin

Steps:

  1. Prepare Your Fabric and Elastic:

    • Cut your fabric to the desired size. The length of the fabric will determine how "scrunched" your scrunchie will be, while the width will affect the size of the scrunchie.

    • If your elastic is too short, you can sew pieces together to make a longer one. To keep from losing the other end of the elastic, pin it to the end of the fabric.

  2. Create the Tube:

    • Fold the fabric in half lengthwise, with the right sides facing each other.

    • Sew along the long edge, leaving the two short ends open.

  3. Turn the Fabric Right Side Out:

    • Use a safety pin attached to one end of the fabric tube to help turn it right side out.

  4. Insert the Elastic:

    • Attach a safety pin to one end of the elastic and thread it through the fabric tube. Make sure to pin the other end of the elastic to the fabric to avoid losing it inside.

  5. Secure the Elastic:

    • Once the elastic is threaded through, sew or glue the ends of the elastic together.

  6. Close the Scrunchie:

    • Tuck in the raw edges of the fabric and sew.

And just like that, you’ve made your own scrunchie! The larger the width of the fabric, the bigger and fluffier your scrunchie will be. For a more discreet look, especially for styles like braids, you can use pantyhose instead of fabric for a thinner, more minimal scrunchie.

A Personal Touch

I love bringing my homemade scrunchies with me, especially when my husband and I go for our weekly picnic dates. There’s something so relaxing about being out in nature, away from everyday work, and having a little piece of homemade joy to pull my hair back while we eat. Plus, it’s always fun to have a few scrunchies in different colors to match my outfits!

Final Thoughts

I hope you give these DIY scrunchies a try! They’re a fantastic way to incorporate a zero-waste mindset into your life, just like I have. Plus, they make great gifts! If you have any questions or need more tips, feel free to reach out.
