Simple Eco-Friendly Haircare Routine
My hair care routine is very simple and low-maintenance, yet it keeps my hair healthy and eco-friendly. Hereβs how I do it:
Wash Your Hair Less
I stretch the number of days between washes, typically washing my hair only 1-2 times a week. This not only saves water and time but is also beneficial for my hair, preventing it from becoming dry and brittle. On Day 5, my hair gets oily, which is when I massage my scalp with a brush to distribute the natural oils down the hair shaft, promoting healthier hair.
Managing Oily Hair
On oily days, I often tie my hair up, wear a headband, or wear a cap if I need to go out. For those days when I want to avoid washing but still have to be presentable, I use my DIY dry shampoo. It's made with arrowroot powder, which absorbs oil, and cocoa powder for color, making it a great natural alternative to store-bought dry shampoos.
DIY Dry Shampoo Recipe
Mix arrowroot powder and cocoa powder (adjust the cocoa powder according to your hair color).
Apply the mixture to your roots and massage it in.
Hair Washing Routine
For washing my hair, I use solid shampoo and conditioner bars. They are more eco-friendly than liquid shampoos as each bar replaces 2-3 bottles of shampoo, and my conditioner bar lasts over a year. These bars are also convenient for travel, reducing my carbon footprint.
No Heat Drying
After washing, I use a hair wrap to absorb excess water and then let my hair air dry naturally. This method prevents overdrying and breakage while saving electricity.
Taming Flyaways and Adding Shine
I use a two-tier brush from Tangle Teezer, which tames flyaways without the need for additional products. When the brush reaches the end of its life, I send it back to the company for responsible recycling.
To prevent split ends and add shine, I apply a lightweight oil like marula oil to the ends of my hair. Marula oil is rich in essential fatty acids and antioxidants, which deeply hydrate, nourish, and strengthen the hair. It also helps tame frizz and flyaways and can soothe the scalp to combat dandruff and irritation.
Cutting My Own Hair
I cut my hair using scissors from Morocco Method, saving time and money. The hair clippings go straight into my compost bin.
Eco-Friendly Hair Ties
I make my own hair ties from old t-shirts and pantyhose, which are gentle on my hair and help reduce waste by upcycling old materials.
