DIY Apple Vinegar

As someone who loves to make everything from scratch, planning ahead makes all the difference! Making good food takes time, especially when it comes to fermentation. Fruit vinegars are incredibly easy to make using food waste, and today, I'm going to show you how to create your own apple vinegar at home.

Why Fruit Vinegar?

Not only does making your own fruit vinegar save you a trip to the store, but it also helps reduce plastic waste and conserves resources. It's a sustainable way to turn what might have been thrown away into something valuable for your culinary adventures.

Recipe: DIY Apple Vinegar

Here's how to make your own apple vinegar at home:

  • Ingredients:

    • Apple cores (enough to fill a mason jar)

    • 1 tablespoon of sugar per jar

    • Water to fill the jar

  • Instructions:

    • Fill a mason jar with apple cores.

    • Add 1 tablespoon of sugar per jar.

    • Top off the jar with water.

    • Cover the jar with a breathable top (like a cheesecloth or coffee filter) and secure it with a rubber band or string.

    • Let the mixture ferment for 1 month at room temperature.

    • After a month, strain the liquid to remove the apple cores.

    • The vinegar can be consumed at this point.

*** Make sure all the pieces of apples are submerged under the water, you can stir it everyday pushing it down. They also sell fermentation glass weights. ****

Benefits of Making Your Own Vinegar

The process only takes 5 minutes of your time, and you get a versatile ingredient in return! Plus, you can compost the scraps to enrich your soil and contribute to a more sustainable lifestyle.

Fermentation Fun

Once you've strained your vinegar, you can use it right away. However, if you're feeling adventurous, you can ferment it longer to see if you can grow the vinegar mother—a gelatinous substance that helps ferment vinegar further.
