Start Making Cosmetics at Home

I'm thrilled to share with you everything you need to know about diving into the world of DIY cosmetics. While I may not be a cosmetic chemist or esthetician, I've spent over 20 years perfecting my craft and am passionate about creating skincare and makeup from scratch. Join me as I walk you through the essential tools and ingredients you'll need to kickstart your own cosmetics journey.

Tools: Before we delve into the ingredients, let's talk about the tools you'll need to bring your cosmetic creations to life. While some are optional, having these on hand will make the process much smoother:

  • Scale

  • Beakers (optional)

  • Stir stick (optional)

  • Containers (optional)

Ingredients: Now, let's dive into the star of the show: the ingredients. From shea butter to activated charcoal, each component plays a crucial role in creating your own cosmetics. Here's a breakdown of some key ingredients and their uses:

  • Shea Butter: Ideal for lip balm, deodorant, vaseline, body butters, and even mascara due to its low comedogenic scale and medium soft consistency. Moisturizes and nourishes the skin.

  • Beeswax: Used to emulsify products, making them more solid and resistant to melting in warmer temperatures. Perfect for lip balms, deodorants, and mascaras.

  • Cocoa Butter: Adds a natural chocolate scent and is great for lip balms and body butters to improve skin elasticity.

  • Oils: Choose oils that suit your skin type for lip balms, body butters, and vaseline. Make butters more spreadable and provide hydration.

  • Vitamin E Oil: Acts as an antioxidant to extend the shelf life of cosmetics, but shouldn't be solely relied upon as a preservative. Great for mascaras.

  • Arrowroot Powder: Absorbs excess oil and sweat to mattify the skin, used in deodorants and mineral foundation powders.

  • Cocoa Powder: Provides anti-aging effects, moisturizing properties, and improves skin texture. Used in mineral foundation powders and bronzer.
