Sustainable Travel Tips
Hey everyone! I just returned from a trip with my teenage boys — their first time on a plane! While traveling isn't the most sustainable activity, we aimed to be as eco-conscious as possible. Here are some tips I followed to reduce our environmental impact.
1. Pack Light and Smart
Packing light makes your journey more comfortable and reduces the carbon emissions of your travel:
Minimalist Packing: Bring only what you need. A lighter suitcase or backpack means less fuel consumption, especially when flying. We each traveled with only a backpack and a shoulder bag. I wore the same shoes for the entire trip to save space.
Compression Bags: These were lifesavers! They allowed us to fit more into our small bags, minimizing the number of items we carried.
Eco-Friendly Products: I packed reusable items like a water bottle, travel utensils, and a collapsible coffee cup to cut down on single-use plastics. I also brought biodegradable soaps and shampoos for a more sustainable option.
2. Reduce Waste and Conserve Resources
While traveling, it's crucial to be mindful of your waste and resource consumption:
Limit Plastic Use: I avoided single-use plastics by carrying a reusable water bottle and refilling it whenever possible. I also packed homemade food, like pizza in a collapsible container, to avoid overpriced and over-packaged airplane meals.
Conserve Water and Energy: I ensured we took shorter showers, reused towels, and turned off lights and air conditioning when not in use. Many hotels offer options to skip daily towel washing to save water, which we took advantage of.
Support Recycling Programs: Wherever we went, we made sure to sort our waste and use available recycling programs properly.
What I Packed
To stay light and sustainable, here’s what I packed:
A small bag with only the essentials: clothing and toiletries.
A lunch bag with shooting gear and a compact, foldable keyboard — great for when unexpected work comes up!
Zero-waste items, including a reusable cup and a coffee mug.
Supporting Local Economies
Traveling mindfully also means supporting local economies. I fell in love with a vibrant island dress made by a local artist and couldn’t resist buying it. We also saw incredible upcycled art, like planes, cars, and musical instruments made from soda cans, and bags crafted from soda can tabs — creativity at its finest!
Appreciating Everyday Life
While we enjoyed our vacation, it's good to be back and savor the simple pleasures of our everyday life, like our weekly picnics. Being eco-friendly isn't one-size-fits-all — every little step we take can make a difference!
