Lessons in waste reduction from Mauritius

Watermelon Rind Jam topped with Sesame Seeds

In a world where waste reduction and sustainability are gaining momentum, I can't help but feel grateful for the valuable lessons my parents passed down to me, rooted in their upbringing in the beautiful island nation of Mauritius. Growing up, my parents often shared stories of how they embraced frugality and resourcefulness as a way of life. These stories have not only shaped my perspective but also inspired me to find creative solutions for reducing waste in my own daily routines.

A Sweet Surprise: Watermelon Rind Jam

One of the cherished stories my mom often recounts is how her family utilized every part of the fruits and vegetables they consumed. One summer, when watermelon was in abundance, my resourceful mom decided to turn the usually discarded watermelon rinds into a delightful jam. The transformation was truly incredible! The watermelon rind jam she made was not only delicious but also a testament to the ingenuity of reducing waste in the kitchen.

Watermelon Rind Jam Recipe:

Ingredients:

  • Watermelon rinds (green part removed and rind diced)

  • Sugar

  • Black Bean paste

  • Sesame seeds

  • Lemon juice

Instructions:

  1. Peel the green skin off the watermelon rind and dice the remaining white part.

  2. Cook on stove top till the rinds become softer.

  3. Add desired amount of sugar, sesame paste and sprinkle with sesame seeds.

  4. Add lemon juice for flavor and a touch of tanginess. (optional)

  5. Once the jam reaches the desired consistency, let it cool and transfer it to sterilized jars.

DIY Notebook

Turning the Old into the New: DIY Notebook

In a world accustomed to buying brand-new notebooks, my mom showed me that even old materials can be repurposed to create something useful. She would often take an old calendar, carefully cut out its pages, and then staple them together, creating her own personalized DIY notebook. This simple yet effective approach not only saved money but also showcased the beauty of finding value in what we already have.

Eco-Friendly DIY Sandwich Bag

Creative Sustainability: Eco-Friendly Sandwich Bag

Recently, my uncle shared a snapshot that perfectly encapsulates the innovative spirit of waste reduction. He had repurposed an old calendar into an eco-friendly sandwich bag. By folding and securing the calendar's pages in a creative way, he crafted a functional and reusable sandwich bag that showcased his commitment to sustainability in everyday life. It was a true testament to the endless possibilities that arise when we view "waste" materials with a creative eye.

As I reflect on the stories, recipes, and ingenious solutions my parents and relatives have shared, I'm reminded that the lessons of waste reduction are deeply ingrained in our roots. The traditions of resourcefulness from Mauritius continue to inspire me to embrace a more sustainable lifestyle. These practices remind us that by making conscious choices and finding innovative ways to repurpose, we can contribute to a healthier planet, one thoughtful step at a time.
