Creating your own Natural Mascara

Here is my mascara recipe. I’ve went through many iterations of it and this is the one I’m currently using. Not only does it allow you to control the ingredients, but it's also surprisingly simple!

Ingredients:

  1. 2g Vitamin E Oil:

    • Benefits: Vitamin E oil known for its moisturizing properties, it helps nourish and condition your lashes, promoting their health and making the mascara stick better.

  2. 3g Shea Butter:

    • Benefits: Shea butter is an excellent natural emollient. It conditions the lashes, adding a layer of moisture without clogging pores. This ingredient ensures that your DIY mascara glides on smoothly, giving your lashes a soft and luscious appearance.

  3. 0.33g Bentonite Clay:

    • Benefits: Bentonite clay is a natural absorbent. In mascara, it helps the formula dry faster on your lashes, preventing smudging.

  4. 0.45g Activated Charcoal:

    • Benefits: Activated charcoal brings a deep, intense color to your mascara. Using charcoal in your mascara eliminates the need for harsh chemical dyes.

  5. 0.95g Wax:

    • Benefits: Wax is the secret to water-resistant mascara. It helps the mascara adhere to your lashes while providing a protective barrier against water.

Method:

  1. Double Boiler Method: Melt down the shea butter, wax, and vitamin E oil in a double boiler. This ensures gentle heating, preserving the integrity of the ingredients.

  2. Add Clay and Charcoal: Once melted, incorporate the bentonite clay and activated charcoal into the mixture. Stir well to achieve a smooth, consistent texture.

Usage and Storage: Remember to wash your mascara wand between uses to prevent bacterial growth. This DIY mascara has a shelf life of approximately six months, making it important to monitor its freshness.

💡 Fun fact: Cake mascara like this was the norm over a century ago. It’s so nostalgic and a sustainable way to enjoy makeup today.

📌 Disclaimer: This formula lasts about 4 hours (perfect for my work-from-home life). It’s also super easy to remove with a little oil—gentle on lashes and zero fallout!

Crafting your own mascara is not only a fun and creative, but it also allows you to be in control of the ingredients you put on your lashes. Give this DIY mascara a try, and embrace the natural beauty it brings to your eyes. Enjoy the process of making and using your very own mascara while knowing that you're taking a step towards a more sustainable and mindful beauty routine.
